Over the last 5 years I have coached riders of all ages and abilities and one thing has become abundantly clear - everybody is different.

My training structure has been developed to cater to this key distinction, the phases are designed to build on each other; however, each phase will be individualised to the rider’s specific requirements. For two different riders the length of each phase will differ depending on what needs to develop and the timescale available.

Another common misconception in sport is that simply putting in the hours will be enough to perform optimally. My 8 phase coaching structure addresses this through developing the rider’s cycling technique and tactical awareness so that the hours they spend are efficient and faster. By emphasising the development of the rider into a complete cyclist it is easier to track their progress and achieve their goals.

My 8 phase coaching structure encompasses the rider’s individual needs to provide them with the best opportunity to achieve their goals.

Whatever the rider’s goal, my 8 phase coaching structure creates joint accountability between the rider and myself by outlining a clear framework and timeline to ensure they are ready to ride to at their optimum.The 8 phase plan is as follows:

  • Phase 1: Pedal technique
  • Phase 2: Balanced power
  • Phase 3: Power
  • Phase 4: Strength
  • Phase 5: Torque
  • Phase 6: Endurance
  • Phase 7: Speed
  • Phase 8: Taper

Drawing upon my experience each phase typically lasts approximately 3 weeks but if the rider or I decide that more or less time is required adjustments will be made. After this period, we will have a coaching review to assess their progress. This review allows me to make any tweaks to the riders training to ensure that we address any continued areas of weakness, as well as, allotting enough time to develop their strengths further.

Wattbike Performance Day

The Wattbike Performance Centre brings together the expertise of Wattbike, the sports science knowledge of Dr Barney Wainwright, physiotherapy support of Madelaine Smith (PGcert BSc Hons) along with the practical insight and knowledge of Bryan Steel for a one-stop- shop for all your cycling performance needs.

The Wattbike performance day is a whole day working with Bryan, Barney and Madelaine where they will develop you in the following areas:

Wattbike Bikefit: Using Wattbike’s unique technology to assess pedalling technique on their new bike-fitting rig, Barney will assess your current position along with information from the physiotherapy assessment to optimise your position to suit your individual needs. During the session, he will evaluate your pedalling technique and ensure that your new position will facilitate any necessary technique changes that will take place during the coaching programme.

Physiotherapy Assessment: Two hours with Madelaine to assess any current injuries and explore any potential issues, as well as create a specifically tailored action plan with on-going personalised exercises to address any short or long-term problems. Included is a follow-up session after two to three weeks to assess progress.

Wattbike fitness test and blood lactate profile: Using Wattbike’s ability to accurately measure power output, your submaximal and maximal fitness will be measured. An incremental blood lactate profile will be used to measure your physiological response to different intensities, and to accurately identify your individualised training zones for use with heart rate or power. Then a short maximal test will assess your maximal physiological abilities. This information will be fed directly into Bryan’s Gold and Silver coaching packages to ensure that your training programme suits your individual needs.

One-to- one Coaching Session: A 2-hour one-to- one coaching session with Bryan where you can start to develop your cycling in the following key areas:

  • effectiveness
  • fitness
  • technique

Bryan will design your bespoke 3-week training plan, with a follow-up session after this period of time.

Cost for the whole day session including follow-up physio and coaching session £590.00

Let me share my pioneering approach with you, through the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum packages, which are designed specifically to help you be the best cyclist you can be.

BRONZE

Go on a ride with Bryan to work on your riding skills and he will identify areas of improvement in position, riding style and technique. On the ride you will be able to talk through any possible areas of development and what you would like to achieve from each coaching meeting. On the return, you will have a one to one session with Bryan where he will review your current level, what you would like to achieve and how to plan to achieve these goals.

Benefits of this session

  • Let Bryan take you on a training ride where he can help you improve your riding position and pedaling technique.
  • While riding you will be able to look and develop any key areas of your cycling.
  • Post ride consultation with Bryan where you discuss your aims and aspirations and set achievable individualised goals.
  • Have an individual 4-week training plan written by Bryan with specific exercises for your development needs.

Cost: £150.00 for one off session


SILVER

The silver package is where Bryan can coach you remotely. This remote system is individually designed to suit the need of the athlete after the consultation where at set times he will evaluate, set new goals and make a plan to achieve your targets. After this process Bryan will then write you an individual training plan for this period. This is done by various ways to suit the athlete including phone, e-mail and daily session monitoring by TrainingPeaks online coaching tool.

  • The coaching package start with a one to one consultation session with Bryan where you able explore goals and areas of develop.
  • Bryan will design you a personal longer training plan tailored to your individual needs taking into account your work and personal needs.
  • You will have regular One to One contact with Bryan through phone, e-mail or face to face contact if required.
  • Bryan will register you with TrainingPeaks online coaching tool where he can set you individual training plan and you can download your sessions.
  • Through TrainingPeaks, Bryan is able monitor each training session and will feedback on each session where he will tailor ongoing sessions if needed.
  • Access to Bryans training group who meet for weekly training session, access discounts from partners and support at races or events.

Cost: £75.00 per month


GOLD

This gold package has been developed for the cyclist who would like a higher level of coaching. As part of this programme the cyclists will have a monthly face-to-face meeting with Bryan including a ride and a session of evaluating, setting new goals and making a plan to achieve goals. This also includes phone, e-mail and daily session monitoring by TrainingPeaks online coaching tool.

  • The coaching package start with a one to one consultation session with Bryan where you able explore goals and areas of develop.
  • Regular Face to Face training session with Bryan to evaluate progress and explore new areas of development.
  • Bryan will design you a personal longer training plan tailored to your individual needs taking into account your work and personal needs.
